Swimming To Antarctica
Lynne Cox is my favorite athlete of all time. I love lots of athletes and personally know lots of athletes, but this woman leaves me in awe. I love her impossible feats and her incredible humility and I absolutely love the way she tells her story.
Even if you are not a swimmer, I highly recommend reading this book. It is not just about swimming. It is about life! It is about conquering fears and stereotypes. It is about faith and dolphins (you will love that part of the story). It is about overcoming the greatest of obstacles and even facing world leaders and bringing people together to celebrate something even though they "hate" each other.
Lynne broke the English Channel swim record for both men and women at the age of 15. Then she turned around and did it again. She swam many firsts including the Bering Strait during the Cold War. All of her open water swims were done under "Channel" rules meaning no wetsuit, just swim suit, cap and goggles. She was the very first person to swim a mile to Antarctica like this and the water was 32 degrees (that is ZERO for those who use the metric system).
Nobody has ever inspired me athletically like Lynne Cox, but I promise anyone who likes to read, even if you are not an athlete, you will be completely captivated by her many tales of travel all over the world to swim.
